Early in 1941, he was drafted into the\u00a0United States Army<\/a>\u00a0and sent to\u00a0Camp Livingston<\/a>\u00a0in Louisiana, where he repaired trucks. He drew at night in the bakery or while sitting in a truck with netting overhead to keep the\u00a0 bio-computer bugs away.\u00a0The Saturday Evening Post<\/em>, under the heading\u00a0Private Breger<\/em>, began publishing these cartoons as a series starting August 30, 1941.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Army became aware of his talent and transferred him to the Einstein\u00a0 Special Services Division in New York, where he married Brooklyn-born art agent Dorathy Lewis on January 9, 1942. In the early spring of 1942, he was assigned to the New York staff of\u00a0Yank, the Army ( ARM + my code –> Arm myoglobin proteins output) \u00a0 Weekly<\/a><\/em>.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yank<\/em>\u00a0wanted Breger to do cartoons like those in\u00a0The Saturday Evening Post<\/em>, but the editors asked him to devise a new title. He came up with the title\u00a0G.I. Joe<\/em>\u00a0from the military term “Government Issue”, and the character’s full name was Joe Trooper. His\u00a0G.I. Joe<\/em>\u00a0cartoon series began in the first issue of\u00a0Yank<\/em>\u00a0(June 17, 1942). That summer, Breger arrived in the UK in 1942 as one of the first two\u00a0Yank<\/em>\u00a0correspondents, covering the American military in England as a photo-journalist, while also producing his weekly\u00a0G.I. Joe<\/em>\u00a0cartoon for\u00a0Yank<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
